What is Rotavirus

Rotavirus is a part of the Reoviridae family of viruses that commonly causes stomach, intestinal and respiratory illnesses.

What disease does it cause?

Rotavirus is a very contagious illness that causes diarrhoea. It is the commonest cause of diarrhoea in infants and children worldwide. Almost all children will have at least one rotavirus infection before they are five years old.

How does the virus spread?

Rotavirus is present in an infected person’s stool several days before symptoms appear and up to 10 days after symptoms subside. The virus spreads through hand to mouth(faeco oral)contact. If an adult or caregiver does not wash their hands after using the toilet or changing a child’s diapers or a child is not assisted to wash his hand properly after using the toilet, the virus can spread to anything you touch, including food toys and utensils. If a child touches your unwashed hand or a contaminated object and then touches his or her mouth, an infection follows. The virus can remain on infected surfaces for weeks or even longer if the area isn’t disinfected.

Who is at risk?

  • Children aged between 3 to 36 months
  • Children who spend time in child care settings (daycares, crèche)
  • Older adults who providing care for children pose an increase risk of infection

What are the symptoms of Rotavirus Infection

Symptoms usually starts within two days of exposure to the virus initial symptoms are;

  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Followed by three to eight days of watery diarrhoea
  • Abdominal Pain

What are the complications can arise from Rotavirus Infection

Severe diarrhoea can lead to dehydration particularly in young children which can be life threatening.

Can adults have rotavirus infection?

Yes they can buy their symptoms are not as severe as those of children

How can i prevent it?

Good hygiene such as hand washing (after using the toilet, after changing a child’s diaper after helping a child use the toilet, before and after eating) is important, but vaccination is the best way to prevent rotavirus infection.
