CHOLERA VACCINATION

What is cholera?

Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal disease that is caused by the ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. It can kill within hours if left untreated.

What causes cholera?

It is caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholera which can be ingested from food or water contaminated with the bacterium.

How is it spread?

It is spread faeco-orally through infected water, contaminated food or human carriers of the disease.

Who is at risk?

Outbreaks may be seen in refugee camps and flooding. Therefore, humans are susceptible particularly children and people in camps, peri-urban slums and flooded areas.

What are the Symptoms?

  • Profuse watery diarhoea
  • Vomiting
  • Myalgia (muscle pain)
  • Mild/ no abdominal pain
  • No fever

How can I prevent it?

  • Health promotion- hygiene, sanitation and supply of clean water.
  • Vaccination with Oral Cholera Vaccine (OCV)
